About Us

Friends on a mission to help cure cancer with AI

We are busy professionals in oncology and artificial intelligence.

We realized there isn’t “one place” to gather the latest information and share what’s happening as these two fields converge.

So we created “Tensor Black,” a place for collecting our thoughts, helping us and the community level up. AI represent concepts as tensors. Tensors are the new black. 😊

We’re the first to post, and will be inviting many others!

As a radiation oncologist, David Penberthy, MD, uses radiation therapy to treat cancer. He specializes in treating breast cancer, lymphoma, and central nervous system tumors. Like many radiation oncologists, he also has expertise in treating many different types of solid tumors.

“Radiation oncology is a beautiful blend of sophisticated technology applied in medicine to treat some of the most challenging diseases affecting humanity,” he says.

Dr. Penberthy was born in Nebraska and grew up in Missouri and Virginia. He attended medical school at Virginia Commonwealth University and completed his radiation oncology residency at UVA. He completed his surgical internship at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, and served in the U.S. Navy as a flight surgeon with VF-101, a fixed wing F-14 fighter squadron based at Naval Air Station Oceana in Virginia Beach.

As an oncologist and clinical leader with over 20 years of experience, Doug is passionate about ending cancer as we know it for everyone. Doug holds a Doctor of Medicine degree from The Ohio State University College of Medicine and Public Health, a Lean Six Sigma Black Belt certified professional.

He helped co-found the Center for Precision Medicine & Genomic Health, spearheaded the development and launch of cutting-edge precision medicine programs and research, and oversaw the build of a world-class cancer screening program. He also plays a key role in managing managing a team of 60 dedicated oncology providers.

In addition, Doug is the editor-in-chief of AI in Precision Oncology, a peer-reviewed academic journal that advances knowledge and fosters novel ideas in the field of oncology and artificial intelligence. As our first industry instructor and advisor, Scott is the Healthcare and Life Sciences CTO at Google Cloud, a PhD graduate of MIT and the University of Washington. Dr. Scott serves on the board of the AI in Precision Oncology Journal, the Lustgarten Foundation for pancreatic cancer, the ClinPGx Board. Scott also sits on technical advisory boards at Stanford University and Harvard University.

At Google, Scott uses AI to discover new cancer drugs, diagnosis conditions before they’re evident, and eliminate pajama time for oncologists. We all deserve to live longer, healthier lives without the scourge of cancer.

Cancer will soon become a manageable condition, powered by our ability to understand, debug and repair the source code of life itself. Therapeutics also become code, customized to the individual, powered by nanoscale physics analyzed by hyperscale AI.

The trick? Scott uses AI to model our lives and data as tensors, essentially high dimensional versions of cubes, trapezoids and more. Healthy lives are paths through these shapes, where machines detect when we drift, then suggest simple actions to keep us moving forward, feeling great and staying healthy.
